Who's Who - SY

CREATING A WHO’S WHO OF SOUTH YORKSHIRE TECH START-UPS

How well do South Yorkshire’s tech startups do when it comes to raising investment? What kind of companies are successful? How fast are they growing?

This new report aims to answer those questions – and this is an opportunity for you to contribute to make sure that the information is as complete and accurate as possible.

Background:

In 2022, the TeamSY Project published a report on South Yorkshire’s top 100 startups. It demonstrated the region’s startup pedigree and highlighted the variety of sectors in which companies are operating. The report, and the Tech SY event that it was prepared for, made a start on establishing a narrative around tech innovation in South Yorkshire.

This report is a follow up, but taking a slightly different approach by focusing on investment rather than company size. It provides a summary of the tech companies in the region that have successfully raised investment over the past five years. It is divided into companies that were established before 2018 and those established in 2018 or later, to give a sense of the evolution of South Yorkshire’s start-ups and scale-ups.

While the initial motivation for compiling this report was the launch of UK Tech Week, it quickly became clear that South Yorkshire’s tech success stories go beyond digital (i.e. software and applications). This report includes companies developing products and services based on new technologies in hardware, materials, chemistry, medicine, sensors and biology. Of course, all of these innovations are supported by computing, but it is interesting to note how the boundaries of “tech” are expanding and blurring.

How the report was created:

Content for this first draft of the report was compiled through desk research, looking at Beauhurst data, LinkedIn company pages, Companies House information, companies’ websites and various regional news sources. The criteria for inclusion were that:

the companies’ businesses were technology-based, but this was not limited to digital technology

companies had raised funds in the past five years through either equity investment, grant funding, crowdfunding or by being acquired – debt funding was not included

The report is organised as follows:

Companies established prior to 2018 that have raised investment in the past five years

Companies established in or since 2018 that have raised investment in the past five years

Companies that have yet to raise investment but have been suggested as “ones to watch” by people working in business support organisations in the region
